The beaches of northwest Istria are not a single postcard scene. Here water meets gravel, stone, platforms, pine shade and small resort bays; each offers a distinct rhythm.
Water beside the town
Close to Umag, the sea is part of daily life: morning swims beside the town, a walk to the harbour and an evening return to the water. Some sections are managed or near leisure facilities, while others feel more natural.
Stella Maris and Laguna are familiar names for visitors looking for accessible seaside routines. A little farther away, Zambratija and the coastal villages introduce a different atmosphere: more open horizons, fishing traditions and places to pause in the shade.
Pines and lagoons
Around Savudrija the shore becomes stony and elemental. The famous lighthouse stands near a wild-feeling coastline, while pine trees and rocky seabeds make a simple swim feel connected to the landscape.
The Istrian coast is best read one cove at a time.
The wilder northern edge
The right beach is a personal choice. Families may prioritise a gently shelving area and facilities; confident swimmers might prefer quiet rock entries. A coast as varied as this rewards small discoveries rather than one universal “best”.
Pack water shoes, sun protection and drinking water, and never assume that a beach has a lifeguard or year-round services.
